Bohumil Hrabal was born in Brno in 1914 and is considered one of the most important authors of the 20th century. He dropped out of university due to the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, and from then on he worked in the most diverse and extravagant jobs: breweries, recycling banned books, postman, or railway worker. He did not begin to write until he was almost fifty. The arrival of censorship and the Soviet re-occupation forced him to distribute many of his works clandestinely.
Despite the fame he achieved, he remained distant from social life. He died in 1997 in Prague. His death is still surrounded by questions and speculation.
